About BERENICE
Hi! I'm Berenice, and I've been tutoring with the Hikmah Foundation since 2021! Tutoring came to me naturally because I connected with the students and their needs quickly. It is not easy moving to a new country, especially without knowing how to express the many thoughts and ideas running through your mind. I tutor because I know how it feels to see people look at you and speak to you while you try to figure out if they are insulting you, trying to be your friend, or asking for directions. These children have so much potential, but they lack the resources most native children have in America. The Hikmah Foundation provides them with resources, mentorship, as well as new friendships so they can feel welcome and normal despite their disadvantage. I am currently tutoring a second-grade girl who is a refugee from Afghanistan. Seeing her sound out a new word or explain the books we read makes my day. It is special seeing these kids grow and get more comfortable with the new challenges surrounding them. Every time I teach is a new opportunity for the students to grow, which is why I continue to participate in this noble cause.
